Role: Rebrand, Creative Marketing, Product Design, Web Design
When I began the rebrand for Southern Illinois Collaborative Kitchen, I wanted to create and ecosystem of digital assets that could be used and reused in perpetuity. The reason for this route was that often, the was no way to get images of the meals before they were actually created. Many restaurants would do one-off meals that didn't stay on their restaurant menus. So I wanted graphics that could allude to the ingredients in the meals.
I created a portfolio of kitchen, cooking and community related images including old protest photos from the region as well as individual food items like herbs, vegetable, fruit and meats and kitchen accessories like condiments and spices. I created each one in white, maroon, yellow, and green so that designs could be used against any brand color background.
I also created a new logo using a utensil set up. I replaced the spoon in the utensils with a iconic local water tower featuring a smiley face. This water town is central to the local identity and immediately identifiable.
Community Cookbook
One of the earliest instances of using the new brand graphics was in the Community Cookbook. This user submitted cookbook acted as both a year book for the organization and a moment of connection with the community. I was inspired to this project after helping with a used cookbook sale. The tradition of community groups, churches, and clubs is long and diverse. I wanted to replicate these interesting artifacts for this organization that was centrally focused on community and food access.
Product Design
For merchandise, I created a canvas lunch sack, lunch box, and cutting board designs to keep in theme with the organization. Additionally, I made t-shirt designs in a few different styles.
One t-shirt was primarily focused on connecting protest with community fuel. It features a new tagline that I created by combining a well known protest chant and the organizations already in use tagline, "Out of the kitchen and into the streets, Our community is stronger when everyone eats". This shirt utilizes the new brand graphics and style, featuring an image of a protest that occurred locally in the 70's and smaller graphics of food items.
For another design, I used a quote from well known chef, Jose Andreas
